5 Things I’ve Learned about Marketing as a Marketing Assistant

5 Things I’ve Learned about Marketing as a Marketing Assistant

Target Audience

As a marketing assistant, I've discovered that the foundation of any successful marketing strategy lies in understanding the target audience. Knowing not just demographics but also understanding their needs and preferences. One client's target audience differs from the other; a small local gym will have a much different target audience than a large HVAC company, so knowing the target audience and what they expect to see online from these businesses involves different media strategies.

Embracing Change is Non-Negotiable:

Trends come and go, and staying relevant means embracing change with open arms. Being adaptable and quick to pivot strategies is not just a skill but a necessity in the world of marketing. When a particular promotion or strategy isn't quite working for a client, it's important to not take it to heart and be able to quickly adjust the issue with the feedback the client has given or if the social media platform you are using has made adjustments, it's important to change your strategy to keep your clients relevant and seen.

Creativity and Analytics:

I've learned that marketing is a balance between creativity and analytical skills. While crafting engaging content requires a creative mindset, analyzing audience behaviour through data is equally essential. Learning analytics has been challenging at times as someone who has always had more of a creative mind. Still, in order to create a feed that resonates with the client's audience, I had to learn to gather the analytics and what performs best and incorporate it into the social strategies.

Lifelong Learning:

The learning never stops. Whether it's staying updated on the latest tools or the ever-changing Instagram algorithm, I've learned that continuous learning is part of the job. Through 2023, I started a Pinterest course that helped me understand what the platform was all about and how to use it as a strategy to reach a larger audience for our clients. Through 2024, I want to learn more about this platform and other social media platforms that can benefit our clients. There are always new things to learn in Marketing, but taking it one step at a time is essential.

Deep Dive into Client's Business:

From their products and services to building relationships with the people behind the brand, a holistic approach sets the stage for promising marketing strategies that align with the client's objectives. I have been fortunate to get to know all of our local clients at a personal event and even used some of their services myself. Getting to know the people behind the brand makes the in-person meetings fun and, therefore, a better outcome in content. We are able to showcase their personalities to their audience, making them feel more connected and approachable.

The key takeaways in 2023 that I will bring into 2024 are the power of always learning and how to strategically expose our clients to the online world. From learning new strategies for social feeds to knowing about our client's businesses and how to showcase their individuality through tailored approaches on websites, social media, and blog posts, my job is fun and challenging. In 2024, my goal is to learn more about other social media platforms such as Pinterest and TikTok and how to properly use different social strategies on these platforms to get our clients the most reach online and how to drive sales for our clients who have products for sale.

Lastly, my journey as a marketing assistant has taught me that success in this field goes beyond the surface level. It involves getting to know your audience, navigating the ever-changing industry trends, having a creative blend of creative and analytical skills, always continuing to learn, and, most importantly, forming a relationship with your clients.
